Checking your IP settings

To Run ipconfig in a DOS window:
  • In Windows XP or 2000 go to the Start Menu
  • Select RUN, a window will be displayed:

  • Type cmd and click OK
  • The DOS command prompt window will display. Type ipconfig /all and which will display something similar to the illustration below:

  • Typically all the information you should require about your PC's network connection is below the line that describes your Local Area Connection. In this example, it is the line that says Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2: Yours may read differently.
  • You will find your IP Address here, as well as your Physical Address (often referred to as MAC address), and your DNS servers.
  • Ensure the settings are according to those provided to you in you Start up paperwork you received when you first were connected.
  • If Your settings differ, and you suspect it is the causing a problem reset your IP settings according to the details provided you on the Start up Pack, or by following the instructions here.
