About Wireless LANs in General

Planet802 Wireless Broadband

Wireless technology has been around for well over a century now. What has been happening for 60 years with TV and Radio is easily applied with today's technology to Data communications (Internet).

If we review history, we find the same buzzword circling the globe at the turn of the 20th century as well. What they called 'wireless' then, we now call FM or AM radio. In effect, we use many different types of radio waves such as our Televisions and Sky TV, we use mobile phones and cordless phones, and we make long distance phone calls via satellite relay. Video is transmitted by news crews using radio waves, and now we network our PC's together in this new technology we call wireless.

Planet802 Wireless Broadband

Planet802 utilize current radio technology in an effort to reduce the types of hurdles introduced by traditional ADSL over BT telephone system. By using radio equipment we transmit and receive data over the airwaves in far greater capacity and distance than could be carried over your copper or aluminum telephone lines. Our coverage areas are up to 13km from our base stations and of course do not require an ADSL enabled exchange. The wireless technology we use currently carries the capacity to deliver not just Broadband as we know it, but far bandwidth up to 32Mbps or 60 x the standard 512kbps data rates used by ADSL. It also does not have limits on upload speeds that you are typical with ADSL and Cable Broadband. In this manner we have leapfrogged the current technology and have not limited ourselves to an aging infrastructure.

Currently Planet802 offer two types of wireless Internet Access:

  • Licensed frequencies offer robustness and data protection for commercial applications. Equipment is owned and operated by the license holder, and often comes at a slightly higher price. This equipment usually covers larger areas and is available in several cities nationwide. There is an element of protection from interference of same frequencies.
  • Unlicensed frequencies (2.4Ghz & 5.7GHz) or Wi-fi compatible equipment means you can legally own and operate your own Radio equipment. It's use of public frequency means there is no protection from interference, however recent mass production for the consumer market means equipment is now very affordable! This equipment typically has less range, but works well in a more local environment (up to 5km)
