Here's how our community service works..

  • Step 1: Planet802 works with you to locate a central site usually on high ground with a good view of your area. We then install a microwave link to a Wireless Access Node, and our Internet provider.

  • Step 2: Once we have an Internet connection, we install a local Wireless Access Point . This provides a 'hotspot' for local wireless users to connect to.

  • Step 3: Users wishing to connect simply install wireless networking equipment in their home within clear line-of-sight to the Hotspot and will be able to connect at Broadband speeds.

  • Sub-networks are added as required, and the network organically expands to meet the needs of the community. Greater bandwidth can be added as necessary.
  • Put it all together and you can enable entire villages, towns, and communities with faster-than-Broadband internet access. Internal Web servers can serve local information from schools, councils, businesses, and independent groups. Voice over IP can provide free and cheap phone calls within the network. Video conferencing and gaming is now lightning quick with minimal delay. Ultimately the community user group determines how to build, expand, upgrade and provide it's own service. Planet802 provides the infrastructure and the bandwidth as well as the practical knowledge to make it work. It is a near perfect marriage of business and community.

Bandwidth can be brought in from a variety of source; leased lines, WDSL, and BT enabled exchanges. Anybody on the network can install an Access Point and share with their neighbors. In this way, the network expands to meet demand.

It is also a natural marriage to the Internet itself - grassroots, organic, and ever evolving - it is a community network free from corporate revenue driven policies, enabled and run by the community, for the community as a whole.

Every area is unique, but you can contact us to find out if there's a hotspot near you. If not, and you have a few users together already we can set one up for you - usually within days. Email ruralbb@planet802.co.uk or phone 01827 874 576 or see our Wireless Community network pages for more information.
