Broadband Equipment

Planet802 Fixed Wireless Broadband Packages

Planet802 own and operate our own wireless networks which do not utilize the Standard telephone network in the same way ADSL does. Because of this we do not require any modems at your premises to interface with our broadband network -making it as easy as possible to get connected.

If you purchased your PC within the last couple years, you likely have a built in ethernet port already. This is a standard "office" type network connection that allows you to plug in an ethernet network cable to connect to the Planet802 provided interface (usually a wall jack or an ethernet cable).

Should you require to get multiple users connected at your premises, you can easily use a router to 'split' the connection and operate your own internal network. Routers like this can usually be purchased for under £50 for home and small office use. Wireless versions are also available that will let you connect several PC's to Broadband without having to run cables through your house or office. Many wireless routers have ethernet sockets as well so you can use both cables and wireless (see illustration below)

ADSL Broadband Equipment

ADSL Broadband uses the standard telephone network to connect your premises to the Internet. By splitting your regular voice channel from the ADSL signal, the same copper wires can carry both signals with little or no interference from the other.

Because if this, each telephone you use on the ADSL line will require an ADSL Microfilter (sometimes called a splitter). The splitter will have two sockets on it, one for your BT telephone, and the other for the ADSL connection. Of course you can only connect one ADSL modem to each telephone number, but you can have several telephones plugged in providing they each have their own microfilter.

If you subscribe to a Planet802 Solo ADSL package, you can request a free Thompson 330 ADSL modem (BT certified Alcatel) and two microfilters. A USB ADSL modem plugs directly into a PC's available USB ports and is typically for use with single user packages only.

If you subscribe to a business account, or are running your own network at home, you will require a Router in order to share your broadband, as well as an ADSL modem to connect to the phone system. Many router models now have integrated ADSL modems and work right out-of-the-box with little or no configuration involved. You can phone Planet802 for advice about routers and modems, or arrange for us to install your network for you.

If you are buying your equipment for the first time, and want to ensure you have the right equipment, you can phone our technical support line for advice on 01827 874 576 or visit the Planet802 shop to buy direct.
